Background: Individuals who sustain spinal cord injuries (SCI) experience profound and ongoing challenges in physical, psychological, and social functioning (Budd et al., 2022). While biopsychosocial needs are a primary focus of care and education during hospitalization, stays are often limited and may not allow enough time to process the information provided (Conti et al., 2020; Ljungberg et al., 2011). People with new SCI often feel underprepared for life after discharge. One method to bridge this gap is through peer mentoring. Peer mentoring is a strong approach in assisting the SCI community in managing and adapting to biopsychosocial changes (e.g., Haas et al., 2013). As such, Good Shepherd Rehabilitation Network (GSRN) is creating a peer mentor program. Aims: The primary goal is to create an evidence-based, manualized, peer mentor program across GSRN. We aim to provide opportunities for community integration, participation, and independence for people with SCI. The program also aims to remove barriers, promote access to community-based events, and increase health and wellness in rehabilitation. Methods: There will be a total of 3 program trials that run for 6 months each. Each trial will consist of 10 mentors matched with 10 mentees who complete the program under the respective version of the manual. For each trial, participants will be asked to complete measures at Baseline, 3 months, and 6 months that assess the following: (1) health and wellbeing; (2) independence, participation, and community integration; (3) self-efficacy; (4) life quality and (5) satisfaction. The Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) Peer Support Evaluation Tool (Sweet et al., 2024) will also be administered at 6 months to evaluate program-specific outcomes. At the end of each trial, the program and manual will be revised based on the feedback provided by participants and the Community Advisory Board (CAB), which consists of 5 people living with SCI. The development of the initial manual was informed by research, available peer mentor programs, professional experts, and our CAB members. This manual will serve as the basis for subsequent versions. In brief, mentors will be recruited via flyers at GSRN clinics, advertisements on company websites/social media, and through the SCI Support Group. Mentors will undergo a 4-to-5 hour in-person training. The training will prepare mentors to engage with mentees via role-playing and additional emphasis will be placed on self-reflection, setting boundaries, and importance of mentoring. The program will also encourage mentors and mentees to engage in physical and cognitive enhancing activities such as meeting at the GSRN Optimal Fitness Gym or participating in adaptive recreational programs. Results/Discussion: We expect to have completed trial 1 in October 2025, see participant improvements in personal outcomes, and gains specifically due to the program. Discussion will be based on feedback from the participants and plans for the next trial. The program will contribute to the mission of GSRN to “enhance lives, maximize function, inspire hope and promote dignity and well-being with expertise.”

  1. Learning Objective: Participants will demonstrate an understanding of the biopsychosocial challenges faced by individuals with spinal cord injuries (SCI) by identifying at least three key areas of need during the peer mentoring program.

  2. Learning Objective: Participants will apply strategies learned during mentor training to facilitate effective communication and support for mentees, as evidenced by role-playing scenarios assessed by trainers.

  3. Learning Objective: Participants will evaluate their own self-efficacy and personal growth by completing self-assessment measures at baseline, 3 months, and 6 months, demonstrating a measurable increase in confidence levels.

  4. Learning Objective: Participants will engage in community integration activities, documenting at least two instances of participation in adaptive recreational programs or fitness sessions, thereby promoting independence and wellness.

  5. Learning Objective: Participants will analyze feedback from mentees and the Community Advisory Board (CAB) to revise the peer mentor program manual, ensuring continuous improvement and alignment with the needs of the SCI community.
