Ethan is a third grader attending Barbara Cockrell elementary. He meets criteria for the disability condition of Emotional Disturbance (ED). According to the most recent FIE dated 3/3/2023, behaviorally, Ethan engages in a high number of behaviors that are adversely affecting other children in the classroom. Parents and teachers reported that Ethan demonstrates disruptive, impulsive and uncontrolled behaviors both at school and outside. Ethan presents with a short attention span, has trouble concentrating, never listens to directions, and is easily distracted from schoolwork. Ethan's emotional disability affects the ability to self-regulate emotional responses under normal circumstances, resulting in rushing through work, needing frequent redirection, avoiding task and assignments or responsibilities, and inappropriate emotional attachments. The problem behavior can escalate to the level where Ethan will not make progress or complete assigned work because he is (attending to another task, distracted, or avoiding initiation). For example, when Ethan is assigned to do a reading or math assignment, he will avoid tasks or not attempt. This impacts access to reading and math related instruction, and tasks such as (timed reading assessments, reading texts that are lengthy or unfamiliar, quickly recalling math facts and procedures, timed problem-solving tasks, interacting with new math problems). Despite these challenges, Ethan demonstrates self-reflection in wanting to do the right thing when corrected. MATH Ethan is below grade level in Calculation and Computation. Ethan can solve Calculation and Computation problems at a 2nd grade level. Ethan can solve a series of problems that involve 2-digit, without regrouping with (80%) accuracy as measured by teacher assessments and class assignments. Ethan challenges with regrouping of 2 or more digits. Ethan challenges with place value confusion and conceptual difficulty. Ethan is able to solve up to 3 digit add/sub with regrouping with a 30% success rate, using reminders, oral, and supplemental aids. Ethan’s disability impacts reasonable and meaningful progress in the general education curriculum and learning environment in the subject of Math within the following area(s): Calculation and Computation. READING Ethan is below grade level in Comprehension. Ethan can comprehend text at a Kindergarten level (BAS I, Lexile 170L). After reading, read aloud or controlled text, Ethan can orally answer explicit text-based questions with a supporting illustration with (75% accuracy, 3/4 questions) as measured by teacher assessments, iready scores, and BAS level text/listening comprehension assessments. Ethan is above grade level in recalling and recognizing his high frequency words. However, Ethan challenges with attention and focus problems making it difficult for him to concentrate on the text which leads to missed information. Ethan's disability impacts reasonable and meaningful progress in the general education curriculum and learning environment in the subject of Reading within the following area(s): Comprehension
